Flood Update - 9th January 2025

Flood Update - 9th January 2025

Just as a further update following the flooding situation:

  • Officers have continued to visit areas across the borough hit by flooding to carry out welfare checks and advise residents. Some areas have been visited twice as the water recedes and more flood-hit properties are identified. Further visits are planned for Friday
  • Officers are also making telephone calls to vulnerable people in flood hit areas to carry out welfare checks
  • Some manual street cleaning started today and will continue tomorrow but the road sweepers cannot operate in freezing conditions so it may take a couple of days before they can get out properly. We are hoping a road sweeper from another authority can assist and boost the resource.
  • Please continue to let us know about any areas which may need to be cleaned.
  • We are finalising the process to collect flood damaged bulky waste and aim to share that information publicly tomorrow. Bookings for the usual bulky waste service have been suspended so resources can be targeted at flood hit properties.
  • 24 council homes have been flooded. Of these 2 are newly flooded, the remainder were previously flooded. Most properties were empty given they were previously flooded and in works. We are assessing the damage.
  • Officers from the Ec Dev and Regen team are also contacting flood-hit businesses to gather information and provide reassurance.
  • Councils in Leicestershire issued a joint letter calling for Government funding. This was co-ordinated by the resilience forum.
  • The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed visited Quorn this afternoon. This was organised by the Environment Agency.
